Meeting the Master Again at the Kobe Knife Show – Takeshi Saji
At this year’s Kobe Knife Show, we once again had the pleasure of meeting one of the most influential figures in the world of Japanese kitchen knives — Takeshi Saji.
Takeshi Saji is one of Japan’s most respected bladesmiths and holds the prestigious title of Traditional Craftsman. He is also the third-generation head of Saji Hamono, continuing the long-standing forging tradition of Echizen blades.
Over the years, Saji has remained deeply rooted in traditional forging techniques while constantly experimenting with new materials and designs. His knives are known for their bold Damascus patterns, striking visual character, and distinctive handle combinations. These elements create a unique balance between functionality and artistry, making his work highly appreciated by knife enthusiasts both in Japan and around the world.

At knife exhibitions across Japan, Saji’s knives often sell out shortly after the doors open. Collectors, professional chefs, and enthusiasts from around the globe gather early just to see his newest creations. For many people, his knives are not only tools for the kitchen, but also pieces worthy of collection.
During this year’s show in Kobe, we once again witnessed the tremendous recognition his work receives from visitors both in Japan and internationally. Through Sunizumi, we hope to introduce more of his remarkable knives to a wider audience and help knife enthusiasts discover a piece that truly speaks to them.
